The Abbott Tech Boys Basketball team returned two starters from
last years 17-8 team. Joe Groski and Rick Paez along with newcomers
Antoine Scott and Anthony Henry helped Abbott Tech build on the
successful 2007-2008 campaign. The team continued to develop and
put together a great season……a championship season!
Abbott Tech went undefeated in the CSC, (16-0) and won the CSC tournament
by defeating Capitol Prep 71-63 on March 4.
The team earned the #4 seed in the Class M State Tournament and
also earned a bye in the first round. Abbott took on St. Bernards
HS in the second round on March 11th and defeated the Saints 62-51
to advance to the quarter-finals against Cheney Tech of Manchester.
In the quarter-finals, Abbott staged a second half rally to defeat
Cheney Tech 52-48 to move on to the semi-finals against #1 seed,
Sacred Heart of Waterbury. The win against Cheney was Abbott’s
20th win in a row and their 22nd victory of the season.
Abbott battled the #1 seed in Sacred
Heart of Waterbury in a tough state semi-final contest. Abbott
pulled within 8 in the fourth quarter, but was defeated 67-49.
Abbott finishes the season with a record of 22 wins and 4 losses.
Abbott Tech players Joe Groski, Antoine Scott, Rick Paez, and
Anthony Henry were all named to the ALL-CSC Team!
The team is especially honored by being awarded the Harold Swaffield
Sportsmanship Award by the referees of IAABO9. This is the second
year in a row that the team has received this honor.
Abbott will say goodbye to two seniors at the end of the season,
Captain Frank Reinoso and James Rosario, both of whom have been
great contributors to this year’s team.
