On September 25th 2009, Natalia Fillion, Khaeris Guerrero, Javias Loton, Erika Rosado and Mr. Christopher Strahowski who are all involved with the Red Cross and volunteer at the Cheney Tech blood drives were invited to the Red Cross headquarters in Farmington, CT. Upon their arrival they were provided a breakfast and were entertained by a DJ. While at the headquarters the students attended various workshops on: How to work the blood drives, what the Red Cross does with the blood, different blood types, and the requirements to donate blood.
Bob
Kaufman, founder of Bob's Discount Furniture Stores spoke to the students about his experiences with the Red Cross and why he supports their cause. Mr. Kaufman also discussed the scholarship program that his company sponsors called High School Heroes. Bob's High School Heroes
In this scholarship program students can earn money for higher education by recruiting donors, number of hours spent involved in blood drives, and tracking blood drive results within their school.
During the event there were other key speakers including Catherine Poulin, Director of Human Relations at Bob's Discount Furniture, Paul Sullivan, CEO CT Blood Services, and Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal.
