The Aviation Maintenance Technology program started by Harvard H. Ellis in Putnam at the old Putnam Trade School. Mr. Ellis recognized that the textile industry was moving south and that aviation was an emerging industry and persuaded the State Board of Ed. to approve the program in 1930. This makes us the oldest public aviation maintenance training program in the country. After the Putnam Trade School was substantially damaged as a result of the flood of ’55 a new location was needed for a new expanded school. A top priority was a site that offered enough land for the construction of an airport to support the aviation program. This is why the current H.H. Ellis Tech is located where it is today.

Demand for our graduates and a declining enrollment in Danielson brought call for a new facility centrally located within the State. Brainard Airport in Hartford was the chosen location due to it being centrally located, large enough to support the current generation of aircraft needed for training and it’s proximity to the major aviation businesses and population centers in our State.

The Aviation (Trade and Technology Advisory Committee) TTAC is responsible for building the legislative support necessary to make Ct. Aero Tech a reality. The members have worked tirelessly for the last ten years meeting with industry leaders and elected officials to make this happen. We are set to start classes in Hartford on January 12th 2009 and begin a new chapter in the long history of public aviation maintenance training in this State.
