National Honor Society
Participates in Emergency Drill At
Day Kimball Hospital
On December 18, 2008 members of the Henry E. Burgess chapter of the National Honor Society participated in a drill at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam. The purpose was to stress different areas of the hospital to see how they would respond in an actual disaster event.
The scenario was an explosion in a high school Chemistry Lab with an exposure to an unknown substance. Upon arrival, students were triaged and sent to Surgery, the Intensive Care Unit, the Maternal Health Department as well as the Medical-Surgical Floor. A distraught teacher also tested the skills of hospital security.
All students were seen by a nurse as well as a physician. All of this activity took place while the hospital took care of actual patients. A critique of the event by the students, hospital staff, Nursing Director and Emergency Department Director was held immediately following. Valuable lessons were learned from students and hospital staff.
