Goodwin's Healthy Youth Week

From April 3rd to April 9th E.C. Goodwin held their 2008-2009 Health Youth Week. Events were scheduled for each day of the week. Thank you to Ms. Shevchenko (School Counselor Coordinator), Ms Raineault (School Nurse), Ms. Martin-Bowker (School Social Worker), Mr. Heath (School Counselor), Mr. Anderson (Principal), and Mr. Moskowitz (LPNP Department Head) for all your work. The week was a wonderful success.

The events and activities included:

The Connecticut State Police Convincer Activity

  • Internet safety with Paul & Lisa, Inc.
  • Take a walk with me! Students took a healthy 15-20 minute walk with their favorite administrator.
  • Stress BINGO to help understand what stress is all about.
  • Anger BINGO to help identify causes and symptoms of anger, discuss consequences of anger, discover ways to control your anger and recognize strategies to prevent anger.
  • Yoga with Adrienne to learn the basic steps of yoga and relaxation. 
  • Meditation to learn how to leave your worries behind
  • Zumba, an aerobic workout to Latin music
  • Healthy Relationships - Offered by Prudence Crandall Center an agency that serves victims of domestic violence in the New Britain and Bristol areas. One in Four high school students has been involved in an abusive dating relationship. They discuss characteristics of a healthy relationship as well as the dangers of abusive or violent dating relationships. The discussion addressed the signs of an abusive relationship and explored how to help yourself or a friend who may be involved in a violent dating relationship.
  • Prom Safety Day: Hartford Hospital Presentation.  Staff from Hartford Hospital put on a presentation on motor vehicle safety and on what happens when you don’t practice it!
  • Prom Safety Day/Lifestar, a simulation auto accident and extrication.

             

The Final day included a Mini health fair in the main lobby of E.C. Goodwin.
