Goodwin's Healthy Youth Week

From March 31 to April 4th events will be scheduled for each day of the week.  Activities will be scheduled for all, including students, teachers and parents. 

Highlights this year include a parent workshop and a "community day" during which service providers will be participating in "mini health fair" for students.

(Period 1): Hartford Hospital Trauma Presentation for 11th grade  Location: Front Lobby

(Period 2): Hartford Hospital Trauma Presentation for 12th grade  Location: Front Lobby

C. (Period 6): Helping a Choking Adult Offered by Ms. Feldman (SAIL Instructor). Location: Front Lobby)

(All Periods): Step Aerobics Offered by CCSU. Location: Gym classes.

Take a walk with me! Students sign-up for a healthy 15-20 minute walk with their favorite administrator.  Location: on or around school grounds ~ 4 students per walk

A.

(8:30 AM to 9:45): The Hard Truth: Offered to 11th and 12th grades by MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). Location: Gym

(Period 4) Stress BINGO: Come see if you truly understand what stress is all about! After participating in this fun game you will be able to define stress, identify personal stressors, name symptoms of stress, discuss the consequences of stress upon you life, and discover ways to reduce stress.

Location: Media Center

(Period 6) Anger BINGO: Anger is just one of many emotions. Have fun playing while you identify causes and symptoms of anger, discuss consequences of anger, discover ways to control your anger and recognize strategies to prevent anger.

D.

(Period 7) Healthy Relationships:  1 in 4 high school students has been involved in an

abusive dating relationship. We will discuss characteristics of a healthy relationship as well as

the dangers of abusive or violent dating relationships. We will look at signs of an abusive

relationship and explore how to help yourself or a friend who may be involved in a violent

dating relationship. Offered by Prudence Crandall Center an agency that serves victims of

domestic violence in the New Britain and Bristol areas.

Community Day: Over 25 agencies/vendors will participate in a health and wellness fair. Location: Lobby

  • Period 1: Grade 11

Some participating agencies include: CT Department of Public Health, Community Health Center, New Britain Department of Public Health, End Hunger CT, Human Resources Agency, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, New Britain Parks and Recreation , New Britain Health Department, New Britain Youth and Family Services, Partners in Health/Start Smiling, Prudence Crandall Center, Vitamin Shoppe, Walgreens, YWCA, Seasons Change Yoga, and many others.

(Period 2) Yoga and relaxation: Learn the basic steps of yoga and relaxation.  This workshop will focus on stretches, flexibility, and deep breathing. Offered by Mrs. Torres-Rodriguez (School Social Worker). Location: Media Center
B.
(Period 6) Teen Internet Safety: Do you have fun putting your pictures on WebPages,

chatting, e-mailing, or instant messaging? This workshop will teach you how to keep your self

safe and away from internet predators. Offered by Paul & Lisa, Inc.

Workshop/Activity schedule for Friday, April 4th ~ Legal day schedule

A.
Looking In Theatre: (for all grades) An interactive theater for young people on social issues. The teen-aged actors, trained in the issues, create the scripts. A performance consists of a series of short dramatic scenes followed by discussion with the audience in which the actors answer questions about their parts. Scenes will focus on diversity awareness and tolerance, sexual postponement, family violence and drug/alcohol abuse.
