On
Tuesday, January 8, Grasso had a visit from Connecticut’s
2nd District Representative, Congressman Joe Courtney. Grasso
had previously been contacted by Representative Courtney’s
staff as part of the Congressman’s outreach to young people
in the 2nd district.
In
preparation for the visit, Sophomore Civics classes researched
Courtney’s stance on various issues and prepared questions
for the Congressman. Students assembled in the Media Center
for the hour-long visit. Rep. Courtney presented a brief
statement regarding his concerns for young people—the cost
of higher education, the defense industry and the local economy,
Middle Eastern conflicts, the upcoming presidential election, global
warming and the youth vote.
Following
his introductory remarks, Rep. Courtney addressed questions from
Nathan LaPointe, Nate Dailey, Keila Torres, Jimmy Stearns, Victoria
Herdman, Jeffrey Baton, Jimmy O’Connell, Kaylyn Costanzo
and Jeff Yuhas, among others. Topics ranged from the value
of the education received in a technical school versus a traditional
high school to how do you think President Bush is doing. Several
students were proactive in approaching the Congressman at the conclusion
of the question and answer session with issues that had not been
addressed. Representative Courtney graciously responded to
each student’s concern.
Grasso
thanks Representative Courtney and hopes to have the honor of hosting
further visits from our elected representatives. |
