The Grasso Southeastern Technical High School Bio-Environmental Technology Department Senior Class hosted their first Green
Technology and Career Expo at the school on April 8, 2009 from
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Local areas schools and the public were invited
to attend. The event provided attendees the opportunity
to meet with solar and small wind installers, green conduction
material providers as well view hybrid and clean diesel vehicles.
The
event had been organized to highlight renewable energy and transportation
alternatives currently available to Southeastern Connecticut residents. Exhibitors in attendance included: Cardinal Honda displaying a hybrid, Valenti Volkswagen displaying a clean diesel Jetta, Groom Energy, who participated in a recent windmill installation at the school, Guardian Fuel, a distributor of bio fuel, The Groton Taskforce on Climate Change and a Sustainable Community, and guest speaker Bill Leahy, director of
the Institute for Sustainable Energy at Eastern Connecticut State University to name a few.
“The impetus behind the Expo has been my students’ desire to give other students inspiration for the future by bringing together the various “green” commodities available in our region. The added bonus will be bringing the community together to learn more about the real options available today,” said Alex Pesarik, department head of the Bio-Environmental Department at Grasso Tech. “The seniors have been working hard and are excited to leave their mark on the school and provide a green venue that will make an impact on people in the community..."
Last
month, Grasso Tech, with funding from Groton Utilities, installed
a residential sized wind turbine to power its greenhouse. Additionally,
the school was
awarded a grant from the Dominion Educational Partnership to
install solar panels at the same location. This equipment
will serve as training and monitoring devices for future students
as Grasso Tech aligns its trade curriculums with renewable technologies. |
