Students from Kaynor Tech are entering their 7th year with The
Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk in their study of seals in Long Island
Sound. Photos of the students show them aboard Project Oceanology’s
research vessel surveying harbor seals at certain locations in
Fisher’s Island Sound. This year’s study is comparing
various seal haul-out sites along the Connecticut coastline and
why some areas contain a larger population of seals. On this particular
cruise, the researchers and students used binoculars and counted
over 280 harbor seals resting on the rocks and bottling in the
water.
The Kaynor Tech research team along with other Connecticut and
New York schools will present their results from the seal studies
at the Harbor Seal Symposium on June 9th at 9:00 am in The Maritime
Aquarium’s IMAX Theatre. The Symposium is free and open
to the public.
