Ellen
Mathews, Class of 1973
- I graduated from Fashion Design. A few years ago I went back
to college after I moved to North Carolina. I work in a high
school in the Exceptional Children Department and have been
there for 9 years. I have also been driving a school bus for
the past 20 years. I will be graduating May 2008 from Appalachain
State University with a Bachelors Degree in Special Education
K-12. I love my job and very excited about teaching. I never
thought I would be going to college. I graduated May 2006 from
Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro NC with and Associates
Degree in General Education and then transferred to Appalachain.
I plan on becoming a Reading Specialst after I graduate.
I
moved to North Carolina 10 years ago and this is now my home.
People are very supportive in my endeavor to become a teacher.
Education is so important and I never realized how much until
I tried to find a decent job. My children found how important
education is. I have a daughter who graduated from Universty
of Wilmington North Carolina with a degree in Marine Biology
and is currently in the Peace Corps living in Madgascar. Another
is attending Meredith College in Raliegh NC, and my youngest
is graduating high school in June. She wants to join the Coast
Guard.

Joseph Pohorence, Class of 1989 - I had a hard
four years while at Kaynor Tech. From the time I enrolled into
my trade to the time I got settled into a final trade, I decided
I wanted to attend college. I first chose Electrical, which
was not for me. After transferring out to the screw machine
shop, that trade was no longer being offered, so I found myself
searching for another trade. That is when I came across Culinary
Arts.
Chef Thayer and Wright agreed to let me into the program and
I will forever be thankful for that opportunity. It helped me
ground myself while I finally had the chance to concentrate
on my academics and athletic career while at Kaynor Tech. My
academic success can be credited to Mrs.Davis, Mr.Snopkowski
and Mr.Emanuel. Each and every teacher I had was great, but
those three inspired in me in a different way that most students
take for granted. I worked extra hard in class since academics
were important to Kaynor Tech teachers. A lot of people would
knock the education students receive while at Kaynor, but the
teachers there took teaching seriously and I took a lot away
from that.
It prepared me for college more than they know. I was able to
earn a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration from Quinnipiac
University (Dean's List) and a Master's Degree in Sport Management
from UCONN. I am currently working as the Managing Director
for a 35,000 sq ft family life, fitness and wellness center
in Charlotte, NC.
Along the way, I worked in minor league baseball as a general
manager, college athletics as athletic director intern in compliance, communications
and marketing, college cross country coach, Aetna and Travelers
Insurance as a business analyst. What I am trying to say and
want everyone to know that you can reach your goals no matter
who you are and what school you attend.
It is all about your desire to succeed and believing in yourself,
while trusting in your teachers to lead you.
Strive
to succeed and set goals that you want to achieve. Anything
is possible don't believe when people tell you that you have
limitations.
My advice to everyone is to be the best at what ever you do
because you never know who is watching and there is something
to be said for personal pride in what you do.

C. Emanuele, Class of 1994 - I
was a Culinary Arts student with the class of '94 under Chefs
Arthur Thayer, Gary "Z" Zahacewski, Reggie Wright, and later
Cathy Mirabilio-Borer. While I learned a great deal in shop,
which laid a solid foundation for the work ethic required in
the "real world", I did not stay in the culinary field. What
my Culinary Arts training did for me was make me a marketable
restaurant employee while in college to help me finance
my college education. I know that very few people in my class
were planning on college, partly because Kaynor had the reputation
as the place to go to school if college wasn't part of the plan.
Students need to know that college IS an option! The academic
foundation laid for me at Kaynor Tech. paved the way for a successful
college career. I graduated with honors as a Bachelor of Science,
Criminal Justice from Appalachian State University in Boone,
NC (a member institution of the University of North Carolina),
and then as a Master of Arts in the Education of the Social
Sciences from The Citadel in Charleston, SC. I now have a promising
police career as a patrol supervisor, a special units leader,
and a training officer with the Charleston Police Department,
and am currently considering pursuing a Ph.D. in Educational
Leadership at Clemson University.

Lautenschlager - Class of 1986 - I was wondering
if there was going to be a 20 year class reunion? Any information
you could provide would be appreciated. E-mail is: alauten315@hotmail.com. |
Ralph
Ross - Class of 1984 - I
was a drafting student under the teaching of Mr. Francis and
Ms. Demand. My 4 years at Kaynor Tech were very rewarding.
I was fortunate enough to start working as draftsman with a
local company with the work program that Kaynor Tech had during
my shop time. I still today am in the trade and am working
for Eyelematic Mfg. in Watertown as a Tool Designer. I started
with a drafting board and pencil and now as you all know "Computers
lead the way". All I can say to any student now is to "give
it your all" and "do your best" and have fun doing it. I want
to add that my son is to be entering Kaynor in September and
will be the Class of 2008! I am proud of that.Anyone
from Drafting class or any other trade of '84 can e-mail me
at nes138@yahoo.com.

Robert
Rowe - Class of 1956
- I
was an Electrical shop student under Instructor Paul Armand
the first year the Kaynor Tech was open. I attended Oliver
Wolcott Tech in Torrington the previous year while waiting
for Kaynor Tech. to open. Paul Armand was one of my Electrical
shop instructors there as well. In those days we started our training with
all sorts of annuciator circuits. (Annuciators were electromagent
actuated flags used as signalling devices). We learned to wire
generators and motors. At Kaynor Tech, the wood shop students
would frame up walls in the Electrical shop and we would
wire the site(using BX cable). My family moved to Arizona so
my Junior and Senior years were at Phoenix Tech (long ago closed).
I went on to a career with Western Electric aka Lucent
Technologies spending thirty two of my forty two years as a
Methods Analyst (Industrial Engineering), and am now three
years into my retirement. E-mail: 35rjt@earthlink.net
