Big Idea

America is a country made up of multi-cultural people who blend their customs and beliefs to create a unique American culture.

Essential Question

Why is America a country of many different cultures?

You will be responsible for creating a 3 panel brochure for the novel Children of the River. You will find the directions for each panel below.

Write a 2-3 paragraph News Story on the events that occurred on April 17, 1975 in Cambodia. (Invasion of the Khmer Rouge/Killing fields) These events provide the background for this novel.

Include the 5 W’s in this story. (who, what, where, when and why) and the effect these events had on the Cambodian people.

Choice 1 Select 1 aspect of Cambodian Culture and write 8-10 facts. (example: Dress- write 8-10 facts about the way people dress in Cambodia) Include a Picture.

Choice 2 Interview a survivor of the Killing Fields. Create 5 Questions you would like to ask the survivor. Create an answer to each of the 5 questions you asked the survivor based on what you read in the Survivor’s Story. Include 1 picture.

Panel 3 Obituary for Chamroeun

Write a 3 paragraph Obituary for Sundara’s boyfriend Chamroeun. (I have sample Obituaries you can use for a model)

Include:

Age and where he lived

Place of birth and death

Type of person he was/his background (use facts from novel)

Why and how he died use facts from novel)

Who he will be missed by (loved ones and Sundara)

Religious service and place of burial (create from what you researched about
Cambodia/Religion)
