Notice
of Postural (Scoliosis) Screening of 9th grade students
Dear
Parent(s):
Over
the next several months, I will be conducting a postural screening
program for all 9 th grade students. Connecticut State Law requires
this exam. The purpose of this is to detect possible curvature of
the spine at its earliest stages, so that the need for treatment
can be determined.
Scoliosis
is a sideways curvature of the spine. In its early years, it is
painless and develops gradually. Kyphosis, sometimes called round
back, is an exaggerated forward bend of the spine and is often confused
with poor posture. Many cases of curvature of the spine are mild
and require only on-going observation by a doctor after first diagnosis.
Others get progressively worse as the child grows and require active
treatment. Early treatment can prevent the development of a severe
deformity, which can affect a person's appearance and health.
The
procedure for examination is simple, requiring only a few minutes.
I will examine the student's spine as he or she stands and then
bends forward. If a spinal problem is suspected, the student will
be rechecked at a second screening.
If
further consultation is recommended, you will be notified of the
findings and will be asked to bring you child to his/her own physician.
If
you child is currently under a doctor's care for scoliosis or kyphosis
or you do not wish to have your child take advantage of this free
screening, please notify me in writing.
If
you have any questions about the screening, please call me at 860-344-7100,
ext 318.
Sincerely,
Debra
