On Wednesday, November 26, 2008, Vinal Tech SkillsUSA hosted a Holiday Movie Time to raise money for the 55th Annual Bernie O'Rourke/Detroit Hunter Christmas Workshop. Five hundred dollars was raised and then the officers of SkillsUSA thought "now what could we do with the money for this community service activity?" The students then remembered that co-advisor Mr. Balch, had a contact at Build-A-Bear in West Hartford...a phone call was made and 39 bears were ordered! The students then realized that they could make this effort even better by hosting a toy drive to collect new unwrapped toys. An announcement was made at school and the students involved in the effort came to school for two nights, December 8th and 9th and collected 47 new toys from parents, friends and family members. A total of 86 items that included the Build-A-Bears', was donated and Karen Nocera of the Middletown Park & Recreation Department picked the items up on December 11, 2008. The effort of the SkillsUSA students brought a smile to the faces of 86 children on Christmas morning might not have had anything to open! Thank you to all the students who helped in this effort.
