Health Students Learn to Properly Clean Dentures

The Junior Health Technology students have been instructing the Sophomores on proper denture care. This skill needs tomastered by Sophomore students to be successful on their District Wide Trimester Assessment. In addition, this is a required skilll for all Health Technology students before they can go out to a clinical setting. While the Juniors have had the exposure to denture care, they now have the experience of working with and educating others on “how to skills”. This is a critical component for any healthcare worker to master.

Students are taught how to clean dentures with a special tooth brush and more importantly how to safeguard dentures to prevent them from falling into the sink while being cleaned.  Towels, or layers of paper towels should be placed in the sink to deter breakage. This skill is critical to know because if dentures are not cleaned properly, infections and sores can result in the mouth especially on the roof of the mouth since the dentures block the natural tendency of the tongue to clean this area.
