| The
Manufacturing Technology program at Whitney Technical High School
is working with the Connecticut Business and Industry Association
(CBIA) to encourage young people to consider careers in manufacturing.
Speakers from manufacturing companies in the New Haven area visited
the freshmen classes prior to the students choosing manufacturing.
They talked with the students about the career opportunities available
in the manufacturing industry, including CNC programming, quality
inspection, engineering, sales and management. They also talked
about the skills necessary to get the high wage jobs, including
strong math and technical skills, the ability to speak and write
clearly, a strong work ethic and the ability to work in teams, solve
problems and use critical thinking skills.
CBIA
is also working with the New Haven Manufacturer’s Association
(NHMA) to fund the purchase of Tooling University software which
will give students the ability to learn advanced manufacturing skills
online. This software is often purchased by employers to train their
employees, so Whitney students will be learning real world skills
that will make very desirable to employers.
Whitney
Tech is also working with CBIA to bring a program called Mech Tech
to the machine tool shop. This program will allow seniors to work
in area companies as apprentices, and upon graduating, continue
to rotate among selected companies every six months, while attending
college and getting paid.
