On Tuesday January 8, 2008,
a group of freshman completing their exploratory schedule in
Plumbing and Heating with Department Head Paul Angelucci
had an opportunity to visit the Sgt. David J. Coullard Training
Center, hosted by the Local 777 J.A.T.C. Connecticut Plumbers
and Pipefitters (Union).
As part of this career exploration activity,
students met Mr. Edward R. Artale, Organizer, and Mr. Frank DaCato,
Apprenticeship Coordinator. The group enjoyed a presentation
that reviewed the benefits of pursuing a career in the Plumbing,
HVAC (Heating, Ventilation & Air Condition) and Pipefitters
trades. A variety of technical concepts were discussed to help
students learn the differences between these careers.
The union officials explained membership application
procedures, including: interview steps, background checks, drug
testing, attendance policies and minimum GPA requirements. Students
were told that recruiters required official copies of high school
transcripts to verify if students had displayed poor attendance
performance and/or low grades during their high school career.
This helped the students make connections regarding the performance
standards we promote in school and the strict standards the industry
demands. Certainly, students were also impressed with the great
financial possibilities these trades offer to individuals who practice
good work ethics and are committed to excellence.
The freshman enjoyed the field trip
and had a chance to gain a better understanding of the excellent
opportunities Eli Whitney Technical High School makes available
to them in terms of career options. |
