While continuing
their "History Alive" project the 11th grade History
students found themselves no longer on the factory floor, but
on the Western Front in the Trenches of World War I. In
this exercise students assumed the roles of soldiers during
World War I to gain an understanding of life and death on the
Western Front. The classroom was converted into a trench,
and students had to remain under cover below trench. Excerpts
from Erich Maria Remarque's 1929 novel All Quiet on the
Western Front were read to the students, while they viewed
images from World War I.
Students then acted
out many of the elements of life in the trenches, including Pest
control, Bombardments, and Gas Attacks.
