The
Outdoor Adventure Club recently took advantage of a sparkling
winter day and went hiking at historic East Rock Park in New
Haven. This is the second undertaking of our group on
activity day to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. We
were met by a naturalist who not only explained the history of
the park, but also accompanied us on our hike to the top of the
rock. During his lecture, we learned that the park was
a destination stop for individuals living all over the East Coast
in the 1800’s. It was easy to imagine the crowds
from his explanation, but it was NOT easy to imagine women making
the very strenuous climb in heels and long skirts. Our
very brave crew took the 100 plus year old trails and used the
railings that have been in place for equally as long. It
was good to know that those railings were sunk into rock!
We
learned why the rocks were the color they were (iron content),
the type of rocks they were (sedimentary) and why the face
of the rock was shear(quarrying). There were History questions
that went along with the monument at the top that reflected four
wars that the United States had been involved in. It was
fair to say EVERYONE who went on this outdoor adventure really
stretched their comfort levels and experienced some new things
they never thought they would do. The views from the top were awesome,
and everyone slept well that night. Another
activity day, another successful outdoor adventure! |
