The
success of this year's girl's soccer team, the first time qualifying
for the state tournament, was culminated by receiving the Mabel Peterson
sportsmanship award by the Greater New Haven Soccer Officials Association. The
award is given every year to a team that exemplifies sportsmanship
and courtesy to opponents and assigned game officials. Mabel
Peterson was an outstanding official of the G.N.H.S.O.A. It
was her special demeanor that won the hearts of everyone who had
the good fortune to work with her and to have her as
an official assigned to their games.
This
award is especially important because the twenty-four officials who
have been assigned to referee the Wilcox girl’s games must be
in agreement that this team out of all the female teams in the Greater
New haven Area (from Milford to Meriden), are exceptional in the two
areas previously mentioned. Wilcox received a unanimous vote. The
girls coach, Sarah Hamilton, stated "I am extremely proud of the
girls this year! I beleive we won the award because there were several
times other teams were very physical and our team did not react and
kept their heads in the game." The coach also said, "as a
team the girls pride themselves on being respectful and staying cool
under pressure."
The team will be
represented by its captains and Head Coach at a banquet to be held
on Sunday, November 2, 2008, where they will receive a plaque on behalf
of Wilcox Technical High School.
