| As
part of a interdisciplinary effort, Windham Tech students are creating
their own books as a classroom service-learning project called “Books
of Hope”. Mrs. Gagnon’s Language Arts Lab Health Tech
freshmen are the creative writers and Mrs. Dimock’s Health
Tech junior Art classes are the illustrators. These special books
are being created for children in Uganda and India. Some of these
children were rescued from child slavery, others live in orphanages,
and still others try to survive in refugee camps.
The “Books of Hope” project was featured in Times Magazine
for Kids, the Washington Post, and on the CBS Evening News. The
books will hopefully provide these children with an escape into
the world of reading and using their imagination. As a result of
participation in this project, students have an authentic venue
for publication of their work. Students consider audience, purpose,
and task for a worthwhile international cause. |
