TO COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE OLIVER WOLCOTT TECHNICAL
HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM:
1.
Is the school a free public high school?
Yes,
there is no cost to either parents or to the local school district.
Technical high schools are funded by the state of Connecticut.
2.
If my son or daughter does not like a vocational technical school
program, is it possible for them to transfer back into a regular
high school?
Normally
there is no problem with a student transferring back to a local
high school if in fact Oliver Wolcott turns out not to be the
"right fit".
3.
Is the school accredited by the New England association of schools
and colleges?
Yes,
our academic preparation is designed for both the college bound
and non-college bound student. It is a unique educational program
which has successfully trained thousands of young men and women
for exciting and profitable careers.
4.
Will my son or daughter have the opportunity to take courses that
will prepare him or her for college?
Yes,
for each academic subject taught, there are top level classes
offered for students who possess above average ability.
5.
Does a ninth grader have to select an occupational area right
away?
Through
the freshmen "Exploratory Program", all ninth graders
"explore" all the available shops for a minimum of three
days. This program allows the student the opportunity to experience
each shop prior to selecting three shops for more in-depth exploration.
6.
What is the enrollment ratio of boys to girls?
Women
represent approximately 35% of the total grade 9-12 population.

What extra-curricular activities are available?
The
Student Council sponsors several school-wide dances each year,
and there are
several class sponsored activities including fund-raising activities,
class trips and proms. Also listed below are just a few of the
more popular clubs available to all students:
SkillsUSA,
National Honor Society, Yearbook Club, Golf Club, Computer Club,
Chess Club, Healthy Walking, Intramural Sports, Spanish Club,
Drama Club, and Aerobics.

Are there equitable opportunities for females to participate in
interscholastic activities?
Yes,
currently Wolcott Tech offers females volleyball, basketball,
softball, cheerleading, and participation in a host of other minor
sports such as cross country, and riflery. The policy at Wolcott
Tech has always been that if there is enough interest expressed
toward a particular sport or club not already offered, then efforts
are made toward providing that sport or club.

Who is responsible for providing transportation?
Sending
towns are responsible for providing transportation to and from
their area Tech school.
10.
How much time is spent in shop as opposed to academic classes?
All
students spend 91 days in their respective shop as well as 91
days in their academic classes.

1. Are all teachers employed in the vocational technical schools
certified by the State Department of Education?
Yes,
our instructors in the trade areas are required to have a minimum
of eight years on-the-job experience in their fields, as well
as appropriate educational certification. All general education
instructors meet the State of Connecticut's teacher certification
standards and are recognized experts in their teaching fields.

What kind of career do students enter after graduation?
The
majority of the graduates at Oliver Wolcott Tech still pursue
their respective trade upon graduation (approximately 60%). Some
may choose college (approximately 25%) while others may consider
the armed services or another line of employment. However, the
advantage of a technical education is that students graduate with
several options at their disposal.

Can I have a tour of the school during the day?
Yes,
the guidance department encourages area schools to schedule visits;
individuals interested can request and expect to receive a tour
when prior notice is given.
