APPRENTICE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Fall 2009

Electrical Code III (A0909)
An overview of selected topics in the Electrical Code Book will be presented with an emphasis on preparing students for the state licensing examination. This course also provides specific instruction focusing on the code requirements for health care facilities, hazardous locations and other special occupancies.
Begins Monday, 9/14/’09

Fire, Access & CCTV Systems (A0928)
Basic fire alarm terms will be defined in relation to control units, fire detectors, system design, testing, and maintenance procedures. Additionally, this course will provide an introduction to access control systems including software programs, code compliance, wiring standards, and common types of CCTV systems.
Begins Monday, 9/14/’09

Electrical Fundamentals (A0728)
Students will learn electrical-magnetic fundamentals, as well as the basics of electric motors and electrical circuits/controls. Learning activities include discussions of electricity and electronics terms, differences between different types of currents and circuits, and some of the formulas used to solve problems. Emphasis will be on common types of controls used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Begins Monday, 9/14/’09

Electrical Theory I (A0901)
Students will gain the ability to sketch a simple atom; recognize different energy conversions; understand voltage, amperes, closed circuit, open circuit, and resistance; convert numbers into scientific notation; round off numbers; know how to use analog and digital meters to determine resistance in wire; apply Ohm’s Law in calculating unknown circuit quantities; complete series circuit computations; and more Begins Tuesday, 9/15/’09

Logic Circuits I (A0914)
This course covers decimal number to binary number and hexadecimal number conversions, as well as topics such as logic gates, symbols and truth tables.  Relevant expressions from Boolean algebra will be used to draw logic symbol representations, and the subjects of registers and counters will be examined. Begins Tuesday, 9/15/’09.

Oil Burners Servicing (A0791)
This course will focus on the following elements of oil burner servicing: ignition systems, oil burner electrical equipment, service procedures-burner not operating (BNO), service procedures-improper operation, annual tune-ups, and combustion efficiency testing. Begins Tuesday 9/15/’09

Heating Fundamentals (A0784)
Students will be provided with an overview of gas heating technology and discuss a variety of topics including gas pipe sizing, gas fired furnaces, heat exchanges, ignition safety controls and the venting of gas equipment. Begins Wednesday, 916/’09

Basic Blueprint Reading (A0031)
Students will learn the fundamentals of reading and finishing blueprints and detail drawings used in the construction trades.
Topics of discussion will include the interpretation of lines and symbols, drawing of free-hand sketches, preparation of three-dimensional drawings and orthographic projections, interpretation of frames, and how drawings relate to materials and specifications. Begins Wednesday, 9/16/’09

Motor Controls  (A0906)
This course focuses on the various types of motor controllers (e.g. manual, semi-automatic, automatic), as well as the different types of control devices. The symbols and diagrams used in electrical motor control circuits are also discussed. Considerable attention will be paid to the troubleshooting of problems pertaining to motor control circuits.  Begins Wednesday, 9/10/08.
