EXTENSION COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Fall 2009

Solar Thermal Systems: Students will acquire a working knowledge of solar thermal systems: solar isolation, system components, applications for energy produced, and residential systems design and installation.
Part One: Six- session class begins Monday 9/14 6:30 – 8:30 pm. $92
Part Two: Six-session class begins Monday 11/2 6:30 – 8:30 pm. $92

Graphic Design: As they pursue individual goals, students will master the Principles and Elements of Design: lines, mass, shape, texture, color and value. They will also incorporate photo editing and publication layout into a final project.

Carpentry for Homeowners: This course will provide instruction in basic blueprint reading, basic framing techniques for porches, decks, small additions and outbuildings, and review the tools needed to conduct small framing projects. The second session expands upon basic techniques and provides advanced instruction for more intricate projects.

Electricity for Homeowners: Participants will learn the skills required for performing basic electrical repairs around the home, including how to repair circuit breakers, outlets and switches, make splices, run simple circuits, and calculate load and resistance. The second session will provide information for more extensive repairs.

Intro to Computer:  This course will focus on the basics of computer use, from navigating the tool bar to creating and saving files.  Three-session class begins Tuesday, 9/15/09$46 (6:30 – 8:30 pm)

Microsoft Word: Come and learn the basics of Microsoft Word, from creating a document for business or personal use to utilizing proofing tools. Three- session class begins Tuesday, 10/6/09

Creating Business Documents:  Learn how to use computer software for your business as you create spreadsheets, graphs, charts, calendars, reports, letters, and business statements. Three-session class Begins Tuesday,10/27/09 $46 (6:30 – 8:30 pm)

Managing E-mail: Learn how to skillfully manage your email through using archives, Gmail, useful labels and folders; processing  emails in batches, designing effective email, building an address-book,  bridging emails; creating a dedicated signature.  Three-session class begins Tuesday, 11/17/09  $46 (6:30 – 8:30)

Introd. to the Web: Students will learn how to create a username and password and begin to explore the electronic pathways to information through conducting a web search on a topic of their choice.  Six-session class begins Wednesday 9/16/09 $92 (6:30 – 8:30 pm)

Web Design: Learn how to create your own web page and manage its contents.  Six-session class begins Wednesday 10/28/09 $92 (6:30 – 8:30 pm)

Computer-aided Design and Drafting Students will learn basic, intermediate, and advanced drawing skills on the AUTOCAD program. The in-class activities will all be hands-on drafting and design as students work with the programs and problems current in today’s industries and businesses.  No previous experience is required. Three four-week sessions begin Thursday 9/17/09, 6:30 – 8:30 pm.   $61.00  per session.

MasterCam: This is the first of two courses in Mastercam Programming and will provide the student with experiences in computer-aided programming with Mastercam software. This course will give the prospective Mastercam programmer skills needed to get into, or advance, in the CNC industry. Twelve classes   Begins Thursday, 9/17/09, 6:00 – 9:00 pm.   $275.00

Machine Tool Making
This course will develop employability skills for graduates who are entering a machine shop or manufacturing concern as a tool maker. Students will gain valuable experience on the lathe, the grinder, and the miller. They will study blueprints for actual jobs and execute the specifications with workplace precision.  Monday 9/14/09, 6:00 – 9:00 pm. $275.00

Math for Entrepreneurs I and II: Entrepreneurs will learn the basic business structures (sole proprietorship, partnership, etc) and the related issues of accounting, taxes, banking, and investing as they influence prosperity in today’s economy. 2 four-week sessions begin 1/28/09 6:30 – 8;30 pm

E2 Refresher Course: This course  provides a complete overview of material covered in the Electrician Apprentice Program in preparation for the state licensing exam. 6 Friday sessions 1/30/09 $92
 Six sessions: Begins Friday 912/08, 6:30-8:30 pm. $92.00
The beginning student will use the software to create 2D-part design and contour toolpaths for milling and turning parts.  People who are interested in advancing in the machine tool trades will need this Mastercam course to give them experience in the latest technology in the field. This course will give the prospective Mastercam programmer skills needed to get into, or advance, in the CNC industry.
