Soccer Team Gets First Victory in School History
On
Thursday, October 4, the Wolcott Tech Girls Soccer team recorded
their first ever victory, a 3-1 home win over Thomaston High
School. The win came three days after Wolcott’s
football team recorded it’s first victory ever.
Junior
Tri-Captain Arielle Levesque said after the game, “All
the trouble we went through was worth it in the end.”
Levesque
was referring to the fact that the Girls Soccer team came into
existence only last year. The girls played an entire
Berkshire League varsity schedule in their inaugural season,
going winless in 16 tries. Getting the program off the
ground has taken a great deal of time, effort, and dedication
from all the girls and their coaches.
In
the game against Thomaston, the score was tied after one half. Freshman
Anna Coons had scored, assisted by Junior Sarah Zbell. In
the second half the Wildcats used two breakaway goals by Levesque
to take the 3-1 lead, then used their defense to put the game
in the win column for the first time. When the final
horn blew, the girls rushed to each other and began jumping
for joy. “It was indescribable,” said Brenda
Massey. “When we won I didn’t know what to
do. We all started screaming and jumping around. It
was like nothing I’ve ever felt before. All the
work since last year. It felt so good to win.”
“All
the girls have worked very hard to make this happen,” said
Head Coach Al Valletta. “To see them win this soon
playing a varsity schedule, in our league, is fantastic. They
really deserve it and I am so proud of them.”
The
girls have four games remaining. The final home game
is on Monday, October 29 versus Northwestern. . |
