National Honor
Society Holds Annual Food Drive
The Oliver Wolcott National Honor Society has collected over 2,200 food
items this season in its annual food drive, according to NHS president
William Smeriglio. “I contacted FISH, the Torrington
homeless shelter and food pantry, and asked them what they needed. They
told me there was a limited supply of canned food items. I
took that back to NHS and they voted to do the food drive. It
lasted about two weeks, and we had a competition between homerooms
for the most items collected throughout. The winning homeroom
(Mr. Rougeot’s Juniors in Electrical) got a free pizza party.”
Finishing in
second place was Mrs. Alfano’s Health Tech homeroom followed by Mr. Tanguay’s Drafting students. “Keith Archer brought in the most items in my homeroom, almost 300 of them,” explained
Mr. Rougeot.
Also, the NHS received help and support from Student Council members who volunteered to monitor each homeroom for two weeks and transfer the items. This amounted to each student being responsible for four or five homerooms each. “It was stressful, but it worked out in the end,” said Billy.
“Our goal was just to help people, especially with the state of the economy. There are people out there who don’t have as much. We should be helping the less fortunate. The thing I liked most was how successful the drive was. The most rewarding thing was bringing it all to FISH and seeing how much food we collected.”
The National Honor Society Faculty Advisors are Margaret Moreau and Kathleen Roden.Mrs. Roden commented, “The school staff, everyone in the building was so supportive and generous. I was amazed and thankful that everyone was so terrific.”
