The services
that the ELL program at Abbott Tech offers are very unique due
to the nature of the student population and the lack of bilingual
staff to teach the general subject areas to this diverse population.
Therefore, the English Language Learners (ELL) are part of an
adapted English as a Second Language (ESL) program that helps
them learn English and at the same time, introduces them to the
general subject areas using English as the only language of instruction.
These services are provided through ESL immersion classes, team-teaching
in the areas of Math and Reading, and shop and academic support
during study hall periods. Moreover, the Bilingual/ ELL department
is currently working on setting up a World Studies and Science
classes that are to be adapted to the students’ proficiency level
in English.
The use of
technology plays an important role in the instruction of the ELL
students. In addition to their required classroom hours, they
receive two hours of computerized math instruction a week and
one hour a day of computer assisted English instruction in their
ESL classes.The
Bilingual/ ELL department works in conjunction with mainstream
instructors to provide the necessary assistance to our bilingual
population requiring support in learning the English language.
