African Safari

Congratulations! You are a student embarking on an African Safari. Your funds are very limited so you must plan carefully. You will not be able to buy too many items as you travel.

You will be gathering information which will be completed in the form of a travel journal. A travel journal is a book which records information, observations, itineraries, and experiences from your trip. It is a record of what you see, do and learn.

You may use the library, magazines, newspapers, the internet, CD ROM's, or any other sources to help you complete this project. Your work must be your own (no copying of information is allowed.) As you work on your project keep in mind accuracy of information, neatness, creativity and make sure you finish all parts of the project.

Travel Journal Requirements
Part 1 -- Complete Each Task

Item Task/Requirements Points
1 A passport application filled out and signed by you. A passport is required when traveling to other countries. 5
2 You will fly to Cairo, Egypt since that is where you will disembark (get off the plane). This is your starting point. You must choose 5 different areas/countries in Africa. One area/country must be north of the Sahara desert; one area/country must be in the eastern part of Africa; one area/country must be in the western part of Africa and one area/country must be in the southern part of Africa. The final destination must be in the central region of Africa. 5
3 Use a political map, one that shows the boundaries of countries, and trace your route in red. Be sure the route you travel makes sense; in other words, there is some logic to the sequence of your trip. Neatly label and color all the countries which you pass through or visit. 5
4 On a separate piece of paper plan your itinerary in the sequence of places you will visit. 12
5 Check a climate map to see what types of clothing you will need for your various destinations. Separate the list by country. Make a list of clothing and other necessary items that you will need on your trip. (Will you need a flashlight if you are camping on the savanna in Kenya?) 10
6 Prepare a travel journal for each area you visit. The journal should consist of one or more paragraphs describing the area geographically; what you liked/disliked about the area, who you met, and their customs, wildlife, etc. You may include information about what you have seen, done, or learned. Remember, accuracy counts! 20
7 Write a letter home to a family member or friend telling them of your travels and what you have seen and done. Include specific information about such areas as culture, history, population, size of the continent, customs and traditions of the people, or interesting places you have visited. 8

Part 2 -- Choose 2

Item Task/Requirements Points
1 Create a colorful chart of endangered animals. Be sure to name each animal and indicate where in Africa it lives. Talk about why it is becoming extinct. 10
2 Locate a current event story from a newspaper or magazine dealing with Africa. Read the article and find where it occurred and explain in your own words what the story is about. Also include your opinion of the story. 10
3 Create a colorful drawing of an African mask (use only authentic colors). Explain what the mask represents and why they are important in the African culture. 10
4 Research a particular tribe (Bantu, Masai, Woodabe, Dogon or other) and explain their traditional ways of living and how they are different from the ways of American culture. Provide background information on the tribe as well. 10
5 Choose an important crop in Africa (plantain, coffee, sugar, beans, peanuts, sorghum or other) and explain where and how it is grown. Why is it an important crop? How is it used? Draw a colorful illustration to include with your description. 10
