On
Monday, March 9, 2009, an official ribbon-cutting ceremony was
held at the new Connecticut Aero Tech School. The 32,000 square-foot
facility will be the home of one of two aviation maintenance
technician programs run the Connecticut Technical High School
System (CTHSS). Governor Jodi Rell attended the grand opening
of the new training center along with State Pamela Z. Sawyer
and State Senator John Fonfara. Representing the Department
of Education at the ceremony were Deputy Commissioner George
Coleman, Dr. Abigail Hughes - CTHSS Superintendent, and Bruce
Sievers - Principal of Cheney Technical High School who will
oversee the administration of the program. Guests were treated
to a lunch prepared by students and staff of the Cheney Tech
Culinary Arts program.
The
main part of the school is a 31-foot tall center hanger area flanked
by single-story classrooms, offices and specialty shop areas, including
an area devoted to teaching students about the use of specialized
composite materials in aircraft.
Additional
shop areas are devoted to teaching students about maintenance of
aircraft engines, welding, sheet metal and other techniques needed
in the maintenance of large and small aircraft. |
