GRASSO TECH BIOSCIENCE TECH STUDENTS
HELP TEACH KIDS ABOUT CONNECTICUT'S MARINE LIFE

ArgiaAs part of their class day, Grasso Tech students Laura Green, Terri Morgillo and Evan Westbrook go sailing on the Long Island Sound. Laura, Terri, and Evan are studying in the Bioscience Environmental Technology (BET) at Grasso Tech in Groton, Connecticut and a couple days of the week they get the chance to work on board the schooner, Argia.

The Argia is an 82 foot schooner owned and operated by Voyager Cruises of Mystic, Connecticut. From May through October, the Argia is a floating classroom taking groups of elementary and middle school students from all over Connecticut on a three hour exploratory cruise of the waters around Mystic and Fisher's Island. According to BET Department Head , Alex Pesarik, students who perform at a high level of ability and demonstrate a responsible attitude are chosen to work a few days during the school week on the Argia.

Josh Lyons is the head instructor on the cruises and Laura, Terri, and Evan are his teaching assistants. Laura, Terri, and Evan show students samples of plankton and put out an otter trawl which scoops up a variety of sea life living off the coast of Connecticut. Lobsters, starfish, crab, and flounder are just some of the creatures picked up in a trawl.

"I love working on the Argia" said Evan "It's great getting out on the ocean and seeing the variety of sea life we have around here. I really enjoy showing it to all the students who go on the trips." Evan said that he plans to study in the Marine Science program at the University of Connecticut at Avery Point.

The Bioscience Environmental Technology program at Grasso Tech offers students training that enables them to work in entry level positions in environmental studies, environmental technology, bio-science technology and in other related areas such as waste water treatment as well as clinical and pharmaceutical laboratories.
