Welding and Metal Fabrication Student Passes
AWS/DOT D1.1 Structural Code Certification Test
Senior Welding and Metal Fabrication student Ben Weingarden has been working very hard practicing for his AWS/DOT D1.1 Structural Code Unlimited Welding Certification.  On Tuesday, March 12, 2008 Ben welded the required test materials and passed all the requirements of the test.  This is a very difficult certification to achieve.  In order to pass Ben had to weld 1" thick open root V-grooved plates in the vertical and overhead positions using the S.M.A.W. process.

The use of grinders is not allowed during the welding process of this certification test.  Two sections called coupons are removed from each of the two weld test plates and are subjected to a 180 degree destructive bend test. Certified Welding Inspector must inspect the root pass weld, the completed weld plates, and the test coupons after the destructive test.  All stages of the test must meet or exceed all of the AWS/DOT D1.1 certification test parameters.

After a close inspection of the weld coupons, AWS Certified Welding Inspector and Cheney Tech Welding and Metal Fabrication Department Head, Robert A.Cullen congratulates Ben on achieving his AWS/DOT D1.1 Structural Code Certification.
