The East of the River Food Drive was a real nail bitter this year.  The rules were simple: bring as much non-perishable food items as you possibly can and it will be counted by the pound.  The school with the most pounds of food wins!  It all began on January 16th.  The schools competing were Ellis, Windham, Cheney, Norwich and Grasso.  Grasso Tech took the lead early and maintained it up until the very end.

Then Norwich and Windham started gaining momentum as Ellis and Cheney trailed behind.  In the end, January 30th, the results were incredible: Ellis came from behind winning by over 1200 pounds of food.

Ellis 4786

Norwich 3567

Windham 2700

Grasso 2656

Cheney 1358

That is 15,067 pounds of food donated by Technical High School students and staff to be donated to area food pantries and soup kitchens! What an accomplishment!

At Ellis the competition was fierce between the Masonry Shop and the three year reining champs - the Electronics Shop.  On the last day the food was brought down by the wheelbarrow to be counted.  Electronics took first place with 1798 pounds of food followed by Masonry with 1318 pounds of food.

The administration got involved offering challenges to the students and shops that brought the most in on a given day.  The school spirit was contagious as the food rolled in over the two weeks.  The students each day planned updates that were broadcast throughout the building from our TV studio The Eagle’s Nest.  There was also a 9th grade homeroom competition that brought in 335 pounds of food.

We would like to say congratulations to all the schools involved. This was an incredible example of the amazing things our Connecticut Technical High School students do to support our communities.
