On April 3, Juniors from the Information Systems Technology program travelled to Windham Tech to use their skills learned in trade to help out a fellow Tech School. Mr. Ed Baxter's computer lab had numerous problems with the equipment. His 20 machines were doomed but, IST came to the rescue.
Over the past year, IST learned about hardware by taking old computers apart and rebuilding them. Mr. Carpenter managed to gather quite a stockpile of parts. All the parts came from machines that the shop scrapped and stripped for parts at Grasso. The Juniors used these parts to refurbish the 20 machines in Mr. Baxter's lab. There were 17 dead cd-roms, 1 stick of bad memory and all needed to be reimaged. This ended up being a great use of outdated equipment and saved the State a lot of money. Hopefully all this effort will extend the life of the machines for a couple more years.
The students put a lot of time in and if they were not able to fix these machines Mr. Baxter would have lost his lab due to the fact that are no funds available to replace them. Mr. Baxter was very appreciative of these Juniors.Way to go, IST! |
