The Norwich Branch of the NAACP hosted its 44th annual Freedom
Fund Dinner on October 19th to celebrate three community leaders
who have made a difference in the community and state. One
of the award recipients was Norwich Tech’s Ed Hogan who is
a social studies teacher and advisor of his service learning group
named “Hogie’s Heroes.” Ed received the
2007 NAACP Community Service Award for his involvement with the
local community.
Hogan’s group comprised of students between 9th and 12th
grade have advocated, raised awareness and monies for cultural
awareness, the importance of registering and voting, veteran appreciation
and youth democracy. “Service Learning is about the
students taking ownership of an issue that they believe can positively
impact the community. These students use the academic knowledge
and skills they have learned in the classroom to great use in the
community.” Hogan continued, “It is an absolute
inspiration to see what impact these students can make within the
community. This award is as much the students as it is mine.” |
