Membership
in the National Honor Society (NHS) is one of the highest honors
that can be awarded to a high school student. The NHS has worked
hard to bring the accomplishments of parents, teachers, peers,
and the community. Chapters in more than 12,500 high schools
across the Nation strive to give practical meaning to the Society's
goals of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These
four ideals form the basis for selection to the NHS. No student
is inducted simply because of a high academic average. The Society
strives to recognize the total student: one who excels in all
these areas.
The
Standards used for selection are:
1. Scholarship - 85 GPA or better cumulative average since attending
high school.
2. Leadership, Community & School Service, and Character
- as demonstrated by activities and teacher evaluation.
Membership in the Society is more than an honor. It incurs a
responsibility to demonstrate those outstanding qualities that
resulted in a member's selection. If the Excellence Chapter
is to be effective and meaningful, each member must become actively
involved by participating in all Chapter meeting, activities,
and maintaining excellence in academics and character. Failure
to meet responsibilities will result in dismissal from the NHS.
School year activities of the Excellence Chapter include a
Thanksgiving Food Drive for the needy in lower Naugatuck Valley;
a Holiday Toys For Tots Drive for the less fortunate children
in the community; a Chapter volunteer
activity at Spooner House in Shelton, CT.;
and fund drives, as need, for local, national, and international
disasters.
The selection process for members in the NHS is as follows.
The Chapter's Advisor and officers will review academic records
of Juniors and Seniors in September of each school year for
qualified candidates. A letter of invite to join the NHS and
an application is sent to all academically qualified candidates
in early October of the school year. A committee of trade and
academic teachers reviews submitted applications and makes
selections by mid-November. Inductees are notified prior to
the Thanksgiving Recess. Those students who are not selected
are personally counseled by the Chapter Advisor as to how they
may achieve membership. The selection process is repeated for
eligible candidates beginning in February of the school year.
