School Counseling

Mission Statement

To provide all students with a comprehensive school counseling program enabling them to gain an understanding of self and others in a diverse society. To participate in educational and occupational exploration, and in career planning in an environment that is safe, caring and supportive.

Statement of Philosophy

The Platt Technical High School Counseling program is a comprehensive design that aligns with the Connecticut Technical High Schools, Connecticut’s Common Core of Learning and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Standards for School Counseling Programs.  Developmental in nature, each student will develop his/her individual potential in the areas of academic, social-emotional /personal and vocational development.  The counseling program is an integral part of the total educational program through which students prepare for meaningful and rewarding lives as productive members of an ever-changing society.  Counselors will function in a variety of capacities including: counselor, consultant, teacher, and role model.  Counselors work as a team member in conjunction with teachers, administrators, parents and community members to assist students in the achievement of their individual goals.

Academic:  Learning to Learn

Goal 1:  Skills for Learning

The student acquires the attitudes, knowledge, aptitudes and skills that contribute to effective learning in school.

Goal 2:  School Success

The student completes school with the preparation essential to choose from a wide range of substantial post-secondary options, including college.

Goal 3:  Academics to Life Success

The student understands the relationship of school to the world of work, and to life at home and in the community.

Career/Vocational:  Learning to Earn

Goal 4: Investigate Careers 

The student acquires the skills to investigate School to Career options in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions.

Goal 5:  Career Success 

The student employs strategies to achieve future career success and satisfaction.

Goal 6:  Relationship between School and Work 

The student understands the relationship between personal qualities, education, training and the world of work.

Personal/Social-Emotional – Learning to Live

Goal 7:  Respect for Self/Others 

The student acquires the attitudes, knowledge and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others.

Goal 8:  Goal Setting/Attainment Skills 

The student makes decisions, set goals and take the necessary action to achieve those goals.

The student understands safety and survival skills.
