At Platt
Tech, cooperation is a key word. All of the technical programs
help each other to make their programs even better. One
recent example is a project that the Information Systems
Technology (IST) program worked on for the Manufacturing
Technology program. Similar to most manufacturing firms
in Connecticut, the Manufacturing Tech program at Platt
Tech has thousands of cutting, measuring and hand tools.
Keeping track of exactly where the tools are and how many
we have is difficult and requires a great deal of time.
David
Tutttle, Department Head of the Manufacturing Tech program,
asked the IST department if they could create a program
that would speed up and automate the sign-out process and
help manage stores and usage with less time. Throughout
a few cycles, Tuttle met with IST instructor Tom Viola and
Vincent Muolo, a Sophomore IST student regarding what specifics
were required for the project.
"Soon
after, Vincent presented to me a Microsoft Access Database
that was truly amazing. Not only would the program perform
all the necessary tracking I needed, it also was extremely
easy for our tool crib attendants (students) to use. With
a click of a mouse, we knew exactly who and where our tools
were," said Tuttle.
This
is a real world example of how one industry supports another
and a great experience for students. The underlying technology
here for any company is increasing efficiency and reducing
waste. Today, all companies pursue this aggressively to
keep them as competitive as possible in a global market
place.
