Summer Reading Program - 2008

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students:                                                                                                    June 2008

The faculty at Platt Technical High School encourages students to read for enjoyment and to keep up with their reading, thinking, and writing skills over the summer. We recognize that through the summer months skills that were honed during the school year are often left unused.  Literacy skills are essential for successfully attaining goals and continuing to grow as life long learners.

This summer all students are required to read one book. A project must be completed by the first day of the academic cycle. The list of books by grade and the list of potential projects follow this letter. These projects will be reviewed by a team of teachers who will assess and award credit based on completeness, clarity, original thought, and overall quality. The projects will be prominently displayed throughout the school. The good, the bad, and the ugly!

For each project submitted, each shop will receive credit. The top three shops that have the highest percentage of summer projects completed will earn a cash prize, which can be used at the discretion of the shop with an emphasis on literacy. The shop that has the highest percentage of readers and project completers will earn $150; second place will receive $100; and third place will receive $50.  All students in the shops are responsible for pulling their weight and helping their shop to be the shop with the highest percentage of their members who have read over the summer.

You can find any of the books at the local bookstores and libraries. Many local bookstores have received the reading list and have sufficient supplies. Please remember Cliff's Notes, Barron's Notes, movies, etc. are not to replace the reading of required works.

Parents/Guardians, you are invited and encouraged to read with your children. Please help us communicate the importance and fun of reading!

Thanks for your support. Have a great summer and an enjoyable reading experience.

Sincerely,

Platt Technical High School’s Faculty
