Prince Tech Celebrates Black History Month

Black History Month Celebrating a Rich HeritageOn February 26, 2009 the Prince Tech Family celebrated Black History Month with an assembly in the gym and an interactive music and culture session in the cafe.  Interactive sessions were held in the cafe with young woman who displayed and instructed young woman and men on how to wear African Head Wraps.  Mr. Henry dazzled the students with an array of African American Music in the café during the student’s lunch.  (Michael Jackson was clearly his favorite)!!!  Mr. Thompson and Mr. White held an interactive music session in the cafe with African drums. Students were encouraged to engage in all the activities.

This year’s celebration centered on the Inauguration of President Barack Obama. The theme was the timeline and evolution of the African Americans in the U.S. from the great inventors and scientists of the 1800’s and 1900’s, and to some of the great thinkers of this century. Small Skits were performed by the student body on the Underground Railroad/ A.J. Woolworth Lunch Counter sit-in/ Rosa Parks- Bus Boycott/ First African American Woman Millionaire- CJ Walker/ First African American Woman Billionaire- Oprah Winfrey and the Inauguration of the First African American President- Barack Obama.

The students showed great pride in channeling their person(s) to give a small insight into the lives of some of the greatest African American of our time.  The highlight of the program was a guest appearance by Gospel vocalist Kit Richardson and WVIT Channel 30 New Anchor Woman Keisha Grant.  Keisha was very impressed by the respect and attention given by the student body.

Once again the Prince Tech students, staff and community have come together for a day of Celebration in honor of Black History Month.
