March is Women’s History Month,
and the A. I. Prince community acknowledged the contributions of
its own members with an Outstanding Young Women of
Prince awards ceremony on March 24, 2009.
Four ladies from each
grade were honored, along with the late Susana Tepi, for their
influence in making Prince a better learning community. After
a breakfast reception for the honorees and their invited guests,
Mr. William Chaffin, Principal, addressed the assembly and encouraged
all the young women to aim high and work to attain their goals. Ms.
Kerry Rousseau and Ms. Sarah Curry introduced the two guest speakers,
Antonette Colon and Sharon Garrett. Both
women are graduates of Prince who overcame enormous obstacles to
become successful in their fields. Ms. Colon is an attorney
with Ernst and Young in Hartford, CT. and Ms. Garrett is a lieutenant
with the Hartford Department of Corrections. They
shared their inspiring stories, exhorting the honorees that this
was a moment in time to focus on all the possibilities in life
and to “pursue your
dreams.”
Ms. Kerry Rousseau and
Mrs. Tina Cotter presented the 2009 honorees with hand dipped white
chocolate flower lollipops, certificates and long stemmed roses. Honorees
included seniors Diamond Cooper, Danielle Sheppard, Lourdes Torreira,
Jennifer Vicente, juniors Jazmine Anderson, Julie Figueroa, Marilyn
Pinto, Steffanie Rivera, sophomores Chasity Alamo, Elsie Alvarez,
Kimberly Roldan, Yamilka Roman, and freshmen Vanessa Hernandez,
Prittania Raffington, Vivian Saint Hilaire, and Chelse Terry.
