Goals and Objectives of the Demonstration Site Grant

Performance-Based Student Outcomes 

School-Based Goals

·          All students will receive a program of instruction that integrates vocational and academic learning.

Students will connect academic learning, technical and transferable skills in projects.

·          All students will receive instruction that relates to the real world.

Students will demonstrate the ability to connect learning with community and workplace applications.

·          All students will experience a planned sequence of workplace readiness activities.

Students will demonstrate their abilities by achieving the Connecticut Career Certificate or the Vinal Certificate of Completion stating their levels of attainment in workplace readiness skills.

·          All students will be prepared for formal/informal post-secondary education and training.

Students will have the opportunity to participate in the Tech-Prep program, thereby demonstrating their abilities to acquire knowledge and technical skills at the Community Technical College level.  Students will successfully complete the Tech-Prep course, complete a career portfolio, develop a training plan, and articulate post-secondary education decisions.

·          Vinal Technical High School will develop a model that integrates the CT Learns Career Clusters and existing occupational pathways in the VT system.

1.        Students will demonstrate an awareness of, and ability to, research cluster areas of interest during their 9th grade exploratory year.

2.        Students will successfully complete the freshman foundation course that will give them the knowledge and skills needed to make informed life and career choices.

3.        Students will receive career counseling to give them the ability to make informed life and career choices.  Seniors will complete a portfolio and culminating activities by clusters.

Work-Based Goals

·          All students will experience a meaningful work-based connection with an adult.

9th grade students will participate in a work-place mentor program and demonstrate this additional knowledge and positive attitude by making informed decisions in life and career selection.

·          All students will develop employability skills through work-based experiences.

9th and 10th grade students will demonstrate job savvy through a sequential series of work-based activities where the primary purpose will be to identify and develop employability skills. Through the use of a training plan, 10th grade students will successfully complete and document (4) work-based experiences.

·          All students will learn, practice, and utilize appropriate work skills on the job.

11th and 12th grade students will experience on-the-job training that allows for daily practice of work skills.  Students will demonstrate work ethics that lead to receiving the CCC.  Students and teachers will use training plans to document and assess performance in production activities and on-the-job (non-production) activities.

Connecting Activities

·          Vinal will foster meaningful connections between school-based and work-based experiences.

Students will create and maintain a training plan and work skills portfolio.  Teachers will use their expertise to help students make the connection between school-based (academic) and work-based (technical) learning.

·          Establish strong connections between sending schools and Vinal.

1.        Students will participate in a student-based recruitment program where they will develop speaking and presentation skills as they give occupational information to prospective students from sending schools.

2.        5th -7th grade students from sending schools attended a summer camp where (6) technology areas were experienced.

3.        Open houses provide students an audience to demonstrate their abilities to the community.

·          Develop solid secondary and post-secondary programs including Tech-Prep, Middlesex Community Technical College partnership and the Wesleyan Humanities Program.

Students will demonstrate their ability to research career and college databases, work on advanced projects, express advanced ideas, and take full responsibility at the college level.

·          Vinal will establish strong connections with the surrounding communities.

Students will demonstrate the ability to work on service projects for the community and complete a specified number of volunteer hours as a graduation requirement.
