EXPLORATORY AND
INTRODUCTION TO HOTEL/HOSPITALITY TECHNOLOGY (3
credits)
All Grade 9 students go through
the Exploratory Program, which allows them
to rotate through all of the trades available
in the school (three days each), select
three trades to spend more time in (six
days each) and make a final selection.
The Exploratory Program is a hands-on experience
that encourages student discovery, provides
individual student career assessments,
compares aptitude with likes and dislikes,
develops decision-making skills and challenges
students in the application of knowledge.
Students deciding to enter the field of
hotel and hospitality will be exposed to
the basics of safety and sanitation, as
well as equipment identification and use.
Students will be exposed to the basic workings
of a hotel. All students explore opportunities
in the hotel and hospitality field as well
as some travel and tourism standards. Each
student will learn basic techniques of
housekeeping as well as the professional
set-up of a front desk in a hotel. Students
are instructed in shop-related safety.
Technology-related mathematics, reading,
writing, vocabulary and science are integrated
throughout the curriculum.
HOTEL OPERATIONS (3
credits)
In Grade 10, students learn
the basics of operating a hotel. Some tasks
include explaining fees/pricing, answering
phones, duties of a room attendant, maintaining
a logbook, front-desk transactions, and
setting up of dining rooms and banquet
halls. Each student is able to identify
the many positions and responsibilities
of the many positions in a hotel. All students
will operate cash registers and differentiate
between hotel food and beverage and independent
restaurants. Students will learn basic
food preparation and quantity food preparation.
Students continue to receive instruction
in safety requirements and demonstrate
sound safety practices. Technology-related
mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary
and science are integrated throughout the
curriculum.
GUEST RELATIONS AND
TRAVEL (3 credits)
In Grade 11, students are
able to use all equipment used at the front
desk of a hotel. They will demonstrate
service skills, perform room service, and
determine food costs. Students demonstrate
appropriate guest relations and service
skills. All students will study geography
in the travel industry and human relations
as it pertains to the travel and tourism
industry. Students continue to receive
instruction in safety requirements and
demonstrate sound safety practices. Technology-related
mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary
and science are integrated throughout the
curriculum.
ADVANCED TRAVEL AND
TOURISM (3 credits)
In Grade 12, students develop
a public relations plan and marketing strategy
and build their communication skills. All
seniors identify their career path. They
demonstrate appropriate sales promotion
and merchandising skills. Through mock
interviews and class presentations, students
demonstrate interpersonal and public relations
skills. All students will continue to study
travel, time zones and climate changes
in the travel and tourism industry. Students
continue to receive instruction in safety
requirements and demonstrate sound safety
practices. Students will demonstrate the
ability to complete a job application and
interview and have entry-level job readiness
and trade skills. Each student will take
the National Occupational Competency Testing
Institute (NOCTI) exam which is a performance-based
test. Technology-related mathematics, reading,
writing, vocabulary and science are integrated
throughout the curriculum.

Students successfully completing this
program can receive advanced college
