OWTS
Student Wins Youth Soccer Award
Melissa Pfeffer, a freshman at OWTS was recently honored as Referee of the Year by Torrington Youth Soccer. The honor is given by the club and its Referee Assignor, Dawn Dell’Agnese, in recognition of the service provided by referees to the sport of soccer. Melissa has been a United States Soccer Federation licensed referee for the last three years and a participant in Torrington Youth Soccer for nine years.
“I like playing and also refereeing because it helps you see both points of view, “said Melissa. “I refereed with the little kids for two years. Now, I’m with the older kids and it’s fun to see how the same kids have grown in the sport.” (Torrington Youth Soccer is from ages 6-12.) Melissa had to attend two-hour classes for four weeks in addition to a lengthy written test in order to be certified by the USSF. She also must be re-certified each year.
As a player, Melissa was on the Premier Team, an All-star travel team from Torrington. She is now a freshman player on the OWTS soccer team. She plans to study Health Technology at Wolcott and become a sports trainer in the future.
