Program Description
The vision for the Health Technology program at the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) is to cultivate highly skilled, health-literate, and compassionate professionals who are prepared to lead and innovate in the global healthcare community. The mission is to provide a rigorous, multi-year sequence of instruction that combines foundational medical knowledge with advanced clinical skills, ensuring students are both college-prepared and work-ready from day one. Supporting the CTECS Vision of a Graduate, the program emphasizes critical thinking, effective communication including medical terminology, and the ethical/legal standards essential for success in modern healthcare environments.
Students receive 540 hours of intensive career and technical instruction each year, progressing through a curriculum that covers healthcare safety, nutrition, the characteristics of high-performing healthcare teams, and National Health Care Standards. As they advance, students gain hands-on experience in electronic healthcare records and explore diverse categories of healthcare facilities. To bridge the gap between the classroom and industry, students are eligible for Work-Based Learning (WBL) in grades 11 and 12, allowing them to work in professional healthcare facilities during the school day and build a direct pipeline into the workforce.
A cornerstone of the program is the opportunity for students to earn several industry-recognized credentials that provide a significant competitive advantage. Students have opportunities to gain certification in Babysitting, CPR/First Aid/AED, Basic Life Support (BLS), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Assistant (MA), EKG, and Phlebotomy.
The Health Technology program also offers substantial pathways to higher education. Many schools participate in Early College opportunities, where seniors can earn college credits for coursework. By synthesizing academic excellence with specialized clinical certifications, CTECS Health Technology graduates emerge as resilient problem-solvers ready to meet the evolving demands of the medical field.
