The New Yorker Takes an In-Depth Look at CTECS and Ongoing Trade Shortages

There’s a shortage of skilled electricians in the United States. This article from The New Yorker takes an in-depth look at Connecticut’s technical high schools in order to explore potential causes and consequences of the shortage, as well as the solutions to address it.

While visiting three of our schools, Eli Whitney Technical High School, Howell Cheney Technical High School, and W.F. Kaynor Technical High School , The New Yorker’s David Owen shadowed several trade students to hear their first-hand experiences and plans for the future.

CTECS Junior, Thomas Yulo, was quoted, “A lot of kids nowadays, they’re not into all the textbooks, but when we get hands-on, now we can understand, and we’re more interested in what we’re learning about.” “By the time they graduate, they’ll have logged seven hundred and twenty hours of theory, which is all the class work they need for their licenses,” David Owen continued.
