May 6, 2025; Hartford, CT – Angela Ocasio, a Social Studies teacher at Windham Technical High School, located in Willimantic, CT, has been named the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) Teacher of the Year Interim Superintendent Freeman Burr announced today.

“Angela’s unwavering dedication and commitment to continuously improving her craft truly set her apart,” said Interim Superintendent Freeman Burr. “As a lifelong learner, she models the very qualities we hope to instill in our students—curiosity, growth, and a passion for excellence. I am honored to recognize her as the 2025 CTECS Teacher of the Year.”

Ocasio has been an educator within CTECS since 2007 and has served at Windham Technical High School since 2015. Over the years, she has taught a wide range of courses within the Social Studies department, in addition to courses in Career Development, Computer Education, SkillsUSA, and Portfolio, demonstrating her versatility and commitment to student growth across disciplines.

“I am most proud of being a graduate of the district and returning as an educator,” said Ocasio. “Graduating from the electrical shop and later coming back as a social studies teacher exemplifies the incredible opportunities that our technical schools provide. My journey highlights the versatility of a technical education, demonstrating that students are not only prepared for careers in their trade but also equipped with the skills to pursue paths in higher education and beyond.”

Ocasio holds a Sixth Year Degree in Social Emotional Academic Leadership for Social Justice, which earned her the Connecticut 092 Intermediate Administration and Supervision certificate. She is currently pursuing a Master of Literacy, further reinforcing her dedication to impactful teaching. In addition to her classroom excellence, Ocasio has hosted student teachers from Eastern Connecticut State University, mentoring three aspiring educators—two of whom are now teaching within CTECS.

Ocasio currently advises the Student Council and has previously served as the National Honor Society advisor. She recently coordinated student participation in the CIAC-CAS High School Leadership Conference and the CAS Constitutional Convention.

“These events provide the opportunity to network with other educators in the state, in turn developing connections for further leadership development for both myself and our students,” she said.

Ocasio also plays a key role in shaping district-wide initiatives. She serves on the CTECS Grading, Proficiency Scales, Social Studies Collaboration, and Climate committees, and is a member of the NEASC Steering Committee at Windham Tech.

“Mrs. Ocasio is a thoughtful educator who reflects on how students learn best,” said Windham Tech Principal Eric Hilversum. “Her lessons are designed to engage all learners. She encourages students to think out of the box, to problem solve, and to collaborate throughout student-led learning activities. It is a pleasure to have a dedicated educator like Mrs. Ocasio in our professional learning community.”

Ocasio’s message to teachers is one of reflection.

“No matter how challenging our roles may be, we need to pause and reflect on why that is so,” she said. “We are not just imparting knowledge; we are shaping lives, providing opportunities, and helping students navigate both academic and personal challenges. Every lesson, every conversation, and every bit of support we offer helps students build the skills they need to succeed in life, not just in school, but in the world.”

“We are proud to congratulate Angela Ocasio on being named District Teacher of the Year,” said State Vocational Federation of Teachers (SVFT) President Paul Angelucci. “Angela has been a mentor, role model, and advocate to all the teachers and students that she works with. She continues to go above and beyond to serve her school community and improve her craft. This recognition is a testament to Angela’s unwavering dedication to CTECS and the SVFT.”

Ocasio will compete in the 2025 State of Connecticut Teacher of the Year competition this summer. Learn more: https://portal.ct.gov/SDE/TOY/Connecticut-Teacher-of-the-Year-Program
