Students in Hamden are celebrating Community Service Day on Friday.

Students and teachers from Eli Whitney Technical High School are giving back to the community with activities at the school and around town.

They are doing everything from cleaning outdoors to putting together care packages for veterans. English teacher Diane Waldron from Eli Whitney Technical High School told News 8 why it’s important helping veterans.

“From knowing my own son’s experiences and the experiences of the people that he served with and also knowing people who have relatives who are Vietnam veterans who have been homeless. I understand the challenges faced by the veterans when they come back from a war zone.”

This is the first time for this event.
