Wolcott Tech Culinary Program Celebrates Black History Month

February 28, 2023

Oliver Wolcott Technical High School celebrated Black History Month with student-crafted recipes showcasing soul food and cajun influence. The menu included shrimp and grits, jambalaya, fried oyster po-boys, bread-pudding and many other mouth-watering dishes.

Seniors in the Culinary program expressed the importance of celebrating through representation, inclusion and educating their community.

“It’s a black-owned business and I’m really glad we could recreate the dish here” said one student about the shrimp and grits dish that was inspired by the restaurant she works at, Sawyers Restaurant & Bar in Torrington.

Another student added, “Getting exposed to more regional foods… it helps to broaden our taste so that we can be a lot more flexible in the workforce.”
